bwin计算机科学技术学院(软件学院) 学术报告会 Human Language Technology and Machine Translation Research in Singapore ZHANG Min (张民) Research Scientist, Institute for Infocomm Research of Singapore 时 间：2011年12月28日(星期三)下午2:00-3:30 地 点：计算机学院会议室(4号楼208) 摘 要： As one of the smallest city countries, Singapore becomes one of the juggernaut economies of Asia and the World with per capita GDP increasing from US$100 in 1960s to US$42,000/52,000 in 2010 without relying on any hard natural resources. Singapore creates many successful stories, beautiful garden city, impressive infrastructure, multilingual and diverse cultures, well-defined social system, harmonious society and life, and so on. Among many, Information Technology and Industry is one of key fundamental resources to drive her economy development. The presentation will begin with an overall description of the country, her history, culture, social system and education, and a brief introduction on how the I2R/A-Star (as the major R&D unit in Singapore) conducts science, technology and research activities to contribute to the society and human being. Then I will focus more on my research interests, human language technology (HLT) and statistical machine translation (SMT). I will answer the questions of when, why, what, how and where are HLT and SMT. This talk will be end with some conclusions and possible with some video demos. 
BIODATA: Dr. ZHANG Min received his B.A. and Ph.D. degree from HIT in 1991 and 1997, respectively. From Dec. 1997 to Aug. 1999, he worked as a researcher in KAIST. He began his academic and industrial career as a researcher at L&H Tech Asia Pacific (Singapore) in Sep. 1999. He joined Infotalk Technology (Singapore) as a researcher in Jan 2001 and became a senior research manager in 2002. Dr. ZHANG joined the Institute for Infocomm Research/A-STAR of Singapore in Dec. 2003 and now is a research scientist and a principal investigator in the institute. Currently he leads the SMT research group and oversees the activities of SMT research in HLT/I2R. His research interests include Machine Translation, Information Extraction, Information Retrieval and Machine Learning for Natural Language Processing. He has authored/co-authored 120 papers in leading journals and conferences, and co-edited 5 books. He has been actively contributing to the research community by taking different roles in many conferences, including general chairs, PC chairs and so on. He is the vice president of COLIPS, a steering committee member of PACLIC and a member of AFNLP and ACL. He supervises Ph.D students at the National University of Singapore and Harbin Institute of Technology (Adjunct Professor). He is the Research Achiever of the Year 2008 of the institute and won the 1st place in the 4th IWSLT (Chinese-English Track, IWSLT 2007). He is a recipient of the National Infocomm Awards 2001/02 in Singapore (Infotalk Technology: Speech, Dialogue and Language) and the 2nd Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress (Machine Translation) awarded by the ministry of National Aerospace of China in 1997 and 1995, respectively. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Asian Language Processing. |
